I bought this book at the exhibition 'The Story of the Totem Pole' at Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden. Of course I couldn’t resist a book about a Hummingbird, but illustrated in this playful Haida-Manga Style (a blend of Haida and Japanes Manga art), was reason enough to bring it home ;-)
Then I learned that hummingbirds also inspire us to protect the environment and to preserve old traditions that are in danger of being lost. When Native American ways were being destroyed by the expanding Euro-American culture (which was made very clear at the Indianen exhibition in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, see below for more information), the Ghost-Shirt religion was established to try to bring back the animals and old ways through dancing. The leader of the dance was a hummingbird.
Hummingbirds symbolize wisdom and
courage
In this inspiring story, which has origins with
the Quenchan people of South America and
the Haida of the North Pacific, the determined
hummingbird challenges a raging fire that threatens
the forest. The flight of the hummingbird reminds us
all the power is not always about size. It is, however, always about
commitment.

This story has become a talisman
for environmentalists and activists throughout the world.
Beautifully illustrated by
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas and wholeheartedly embraced by two of the world's
most influential leaders, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai and His
Holiness the Dalai Lama, Flight
of the Hummingbird inspires
us all to act on behalf of the world's limited and precious resources.
